Every time we make a call to a subprogram in our PL/SQL code, a slight overhead is necessary to process the call. No big deal, we're taught to be modular programmers and it is very slight and surely beats having duplicate code all over the place. Imagine, however, that this call is inside a loop and being called millions of times. Now, it can become a bit expensive. One of the new features of Oracle 11g will eliminate this overhead and it can be implemented automatically with no changes to your code as well as being able to be manipulated for each and every session or call.
