Prerequisites
The PMP exam is based on the PMI project management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and is designed for individuals who want to fully understand the PMBOK body of knowledge and those who would like to prepare for and pass PMI's PMP exam. PMI's prerequisites for taking the PMP Certification exam vary based on the background of the candidate as follows:
- Individuals holding a secondary degree (high school diploma, associate's degree or the global equivalent) need to show
- 7,500 hours leading and directing projects
- 35 hours of project management education
- Individuals holding a four (4) year degree need to show
- 4,500 hours leading and directing projects
- 35 hours of project management education
The PMP certification exam has 200 multiple-choice questions, and you have four hours to complete it. To maintain your PMP you must earn 60 professional development units (PDU's) every three years.

Please note that your PMI application requires you to list the projects that you have lead and/or directed that total the required hours noted above. If PMI audits an application the student is required to print the PDF of their application and have their supervisor/sponsor or equivalent sign the document and the envelope. If the student did projects at more than one company, the student will need to validate the projects that they did at each company and by having each supervisor/sponsor sign the PDF of their application and the envelope.
To maintain your PMP you must earn 60 professional development units (PDU's) every three years.
